Most of us spend our lives oscillating between the past and the future—replaying old stories or anxiously planning for what's to come. Meanwhile, the only moment we ever truly have—this one, right now—slips by unnoticed.
The breath is the perfect teacher for presence. It exists only in the now. You cannot breathe yesterday's breath or tomorrow's breath. You can only breathe this breath, in this moment.
When you bring your full attention to your breathing, you are immediately brought into the present. The mind's endless commentary quiets. The body relaxes. A spaciousness opens up. In this spaciousness, you discover that peace is not something to achieve in the future—it's already here, waiting for you in the simple act of breathing.
This is not spiritual bypassing or denial of our challenges. Rather, it's discovering that we are more resourced to meet life's difficulties when we're fully present. The present moment is where our true power resides—the power to respond rather than react, to create rather than repeat, to live rather than merely exist.
